Imbenge baskets and bowls
The Zulu tribe are the largest ethnic group in South Africa and have long been associated with their skill and artistry in fashioning baskets from the native plants and grasses of their home. The Zulu people living in urban areas invented a new kind of basket, the imbenge basket woven entirely from up-cycled telephone wire. The baskets are colourful and have kept their traditional patterns. Imbenge baskets are sturdy and washable. While most commonly used as a decorative ornament, the Imbenge basket is also a functional object.
