Kenyan “Kisii Stone Nativity Set”

This lustrous kisii stone nativity set is first carved into the shape of the nativity figures which are then dyed with ink or paint and finished with a coating of beeswax. The final step is the detailed etching or carving on the surface of the pieces.

The Kisii stones are a soapstone from Western Kenya. They are first shaped using a panga, in order to create its rough shape. A hammer and chisel are then used to give the stone a defined shape. The soapstone is lastly immersed into water so that it is easier to carve.
